Taylar’s favorite summer destination is St. Andrews, NB. She highly recommends visiting Kingsbrae Garden—a must-see for anyone who hasn’t experienced its beauty.

Taylar’s warm personality and commitment to animal care make her an invaluable part of the OVH team.

Questions

  • What Is your pets name and how did you choose it?

My little brown tabby with white, Stella Marie, is now 10 years old. I named her Stella after a character in a kids’ movie I had seen shortly before adopting her—it just seemed to suit her perfectly. Her middle name, Marie, came later as her mischievous personality developed. She needed a middle name for those moments when she required a stern talking-to, and Marie seemed to fit. After all, who doesn’t know someone with the middle name Marie?

  • Can you describe a heartwarming moment?

    I’ve experienced at the hospital:
When I first started working at OVH, I helped with a nail trim on a little brown Chihuahua. He was described as a highly nervous patient. The first time I met him, he was very vocal and scared—one of the most fearful patients I’d encountered early in my veterinary career. I remember wishing I could somehow show him love and reassure him that we weren’t trying to hurt him, but his fear made it impossible at the time.

Over time, this little brown Chihuahua became one of the patients I hold most dear. Gradually, he began to trust me. Now, when he comes in for nail trims, he snuggles into my arms and allows me to shower him with love for the few minutes it takes to complete the task. He’s no longer vocal—just a nervous little guy who needs some extra care and affection.

This sweet boy’s story is such a powerful reminder not to judge a book by its cover and to give nervous animals the time and understanding they need. I love how far he’s come, and I’m so proud to have played a part in helping him feel safe and loved.

  • What advancement in veterinary medicine are you most excited about?

One area I’m deeply passionate about is the study and continuous advancement of behavior and fear-free handling techniques. While not a brand-new field, it’s one that is always evolving. We’re constantly learning new ways to handle our patients in ways that minimize their stress and respect their emotional well-being.

Studies have shown that positive experiences during veterinary visits can significantly improve future visits, while stressful or fearful experiences can have lasting negative impacts.

This is an area I’ve personally dedicated a lot of time to studying since entering the field, and it’s something I hope to continue learning about as new insights and techniques emerge.
