Dr. Julia

Veterinarian

Dr. Julia is proud to hail from Shubenacadie, NS. She now calls Fredericton/Oromocto her home, where she lives with her husband, three children and their energetic dog Toby. Her journey into veterinary medicine began at the Agricultural College, followed by studies at the Atlantic Veterinary College and UPEI, where she honed her skills and passion for animal care.

Dr. Julia is a true morning person, often starting her day with the music of Great Big Sea, her all-time favorite concert. Outside of her work at the clinic, she thrives in the great outdoors, spending her weekends cross-country skiing, hiking with her kids and dog, or cultivating her beautiful garden filled with vibrant flowers and fresh vegetables.

When the weather isn’t cooperating, you’ll find Dr. Julia indulging her creative side, playing the piano or saxophone—talents that occasionally entertain her lucky colleagues. A former swim team member, she also has a love for chickens and is always up for visiting a coop, so don’t be surprised if she asks about yours!

For a fun conversation starter during your next visit, ask her about the time she met "Muscle Man" Randy Savage—an experience as unique as her approach to veterinary care.

Questions

  • What is the most unusual animal you have treated?

One of the most unusual cases I encountered was while working as a large animal veterinarian in St. John’s. I was called to treat pygmy goats living in a house in the city—an unexpected sight for an urban setting! One of the goats had developed a urinary blockage from eating too many Timbits (a classic Canadian problem).

To save his life, I collaborated with a small animal veterinarian to perform a procedure typically done on cats, known as PU surgery. Thanks to the teamwork across our profession, we successfully saved the goat’s life. It was a moment that reinforced the power of collaboration and innovation in veterinary care.

  • What is your favourite part about working with animals?

My favorite part of working with animals is comforting them and earning their trust during some of the most stressful moments of their lives. There’s nothing more rewarding than witnessing their relief and healing—and those moments when it feels like a true miracle has happened.

  • What is your pets name and how did you choose it?

We have the best dog, Toby, who was named after Astro Boy before his transformation into the famous character. Our cat, Princess Tiabeanie (Bean for short), is a bundle of sass, frustration, and a little bit of chaos. Despite her quirks, she loves her family deeply and is inspired by a TV show character who shares her fiery personality.

  • What Inspired You to Work in This Industry?

I was inspired to work in veterinary medicine by my upbringing on a farm and following my dad, who is also a veterinarian, on farm calls. Being surrounded by animals from an early age instilled a love and fascination for them that only grew stronger as I got older. Choosing a career in veterinary medicine felt like the perfect way to combine my passion for animals with my desire to help them thrive.

  • What is your advice to pet owners?

Picture the companion you want by your side in 2, 5, 10, or even 15 years. Then consider what steps you need to take to get them there. Socialize them, handle them, encourage good manners, brush their teeth, keep them lean and active, and start these habits right from the beginning. A little effort now will go a long way in ensuring a happy, healthy future for your pet.
