Questions
-
What’s your favorite animal and why?
My favorite animal is the sheep. I fell in love with them during my first year of vet school in the UK while lambing in Wales. I stayed on a farm with 3,000 pregnant ewes and helped deliver (mostly) twins for each of them. It was an incredible experience, and I loved it so much that I went back three more years! Every moment spent with those sheep was unforgettable.

What is the most rewarding aspect of your job?
The most rewarding part of my job is helping animals live a good quality of life while giving their people as many happy years as possible with them. Owning a pet involves so much, and veterinary medicine offers incredible possibilities these days. My role is to guide owners through the options, listen to their concerns, and help them make the best decisions for their pets and their families. I love building relationships with patients and their owners, seeing them year after year, and being part of their journey. Coming into the hospital to interact with pets and their people always brings me joy!

Can you share a memorable story about a pet you’ve treated?
One of my favorite patients was a little Chiweenie named Jake. He first came to me because he got sick from a new diet his owner had tried to make him healthier. Over time, he developed ongoing GI issues and anal gland problems. Despite feeling under the weather at times, Jake’s little tail never stopped wagging—it was always going a mile a minute!
Eventually, Jake had his anal glands removed and went on to live a long and happy life. His owner and I worked hard to manage his GI issues, which were kept in check as long as Jake avoided sneaking Flaming Hot Cheetos off the sidewalk! Jake and his owner were such a joy, and I still keep in touch with her to this day.

What inspired you to work in this industry?
My inspiration to work in this industry started a long time ago. I come from a family of human doctors—generations of them, in fact! As a kid, I planned on following in their footsteps and going into human medicine. Then, when I was about 9 or 10 years old, I realized I could be a doctor for animals instead!
I was always the kid finding strays, and the idea of combining my love of medicine with my passion for animals was incredibly exciting. It wasn’t a straight road to where I am now, but that moment was the spark that set me on my journey into veterinary medicine.

How do you approach difficult cases or diagnoses?
I believe in a collaborative approach with pet owners. I start by making the best recommendations for the pet, then work closely with the owner to create a plan that fits their home life and circumstances. My job is to provide the information and support needed to develop a treatment plan tailored to the individual pet and family in front of me. Together, we make adjustments as needed to ensure the best possible care for their unique situation.
