At Oromocto Veterinary Hospital, we recognize the importance of accurate and timely diagnosis for your pet's health. Abdominal ultrasound is a key diagnostic tool that allows us to examine your pet’s internal organs, including the liver, kidneys, spleen, bladder, pancreas, adrenal glands, lymph nodes, and intestines. When blood work and X-rays don’t offer clear answers, ultrasound is often the next step in pinpointing the cause of an illness or further defining the issue.
To ensure comfort, mild sedation is often used, and if necessary, additional sedation may be provided to help your pet remain calm during the scan.
Ultrasound is also an effective, non-invasive way to diagnose pregnancy in both cats and dogs. It’s a quick, cost-efficient, and safe procedure for unborn puppies or kittens. Pregnancy can typically be detected 18-20 days after breeding, with more precise results available after 28 days. While it may not always give an exact count of the litter, it does allow us to monitor heartbeats and provide an estimated count of the puppies or kittens.

Advanced Imaging for Accurate Diagnosis
If complications such as uterine infections or issues like aborted fetuses are detected during a pregnancy ultrasound, we can identify them early and initiate the appropriate treatment. This early detection increases the likelihood of a successful, healthy pregnancy by addressing potential problems as soon as they arise.
