Animal lovers are fortunate to live in this community.  The Oromocto and Area Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (SPCA) is one of the best animal shelters in New Brunswick!  This SPCA is run by a dedicated Board of Directors and a great group of Staff and volunteers.

Did you know that the Oromocto SPCA handles, year in and year out, over 800 animals of many different species?  This number is impressive even for a town much larger than Oromocto.  Over the years I have worked with shelters and rescue groups in the US and Ontario, but I have found that the Oromocto SPCA is the most progressive and forward thinking.  They do more for their animals than any other organization that I have worked with.

This group is a well-oiled machine.  As soon as they hear that there are a large number of seized animals coming in to the Oromocto SPCA, the ‘troops’ of volunteers come out.  Stations are set up to initially evaluate the animals.  Any animals that need veterinary medical care are taken immediately to the vet.  One group will groom and bath the animals, the next will deworm and apply flea products, another group will set up housing and food for the animals.  All the while, they are speaking quietly and lovingly to frightened animals that have not seen kindness in a long time.

Then the strong, well organized Foster system kicks in.  Foster families take one or several animals to their homes to care, convalesce and assess.  Many, many animals receive their first sense that life will be different from now on, once they arrive at their foster home.  The Oromocto SPCA Foster system is so well run, it allows the shelter to say, ‘Yes’, when animals need to be relinquished because their owners can no longer care for an animal or when a stray is rescued.

The Oromocto SPCA makes it easy for everyone to contribute.  They allow volunteers to walk dogs and groom cats.  They take donations as cash, blankets and supplies, work in kind, and even through your old beer bottles!  Next time you meet a member of the Oromocto and Area SPCA or a volunteer, thank them for their service.  They’ve earned it!

This town and surrounding area does so much to support the SPCA, including a phenomenal adoption rate. Other shelters just can’t cope with the numbers of unwanted pets, and will often send animals to the Oromocto SPCA to take advantage of their strong adoption numbers. If you find a cute cat or puppy at the shelter, adopt it!  If you delay, it might be selected by someone else later in the day!
